In this age of "streaming broadcasts' from all corners of the world, does anyone still listen to crackling short wave broadcasts?

Yes, although not as much as I used to. Too many wackjob religious nuts.

I listen frequently, a few times a week give or take.
In the most industrialized nations SW isn't nearly as popular as it once was but in the underdeveloped world SW is king.
I use my well worn Radio Shack DX-398 a.k.a. Sangean ATS-909, Siemens RK777, and Roberts R861. I also occasionally listen with my highly modified BC-348.

I mostly listen to WBCQ, pirate stations, and news programs from some international broadcasters such as China Radio International.

I still listen to shortave almost everyday here in Brazil, I can listen to AWR to Africa, BBC world service and so many others stations. Tips for good listening: near any lakes, and specially in the speak the waves pop around up from many countries.

in many parts of the world that is all there is to listen to. Pacific Islands, some parts of asia, etc. Lot's of folks do it as a hobby or to get news from other countries and just for fun.

Grundig are worth looking at. They're expensive but very high quality.

Only the main international channels... not the messed up weird pirate stations
