Do they buy them or are they given them? how do concert performers/organizers afford to give away tickets if they do? how much does a radio station put away per year for tickets if they buy them?

They're given them for publicity or are traded for commercials.

The promotion company usually gives a certain number of free tickets to radio stations to get free advertising of the event. This way the radio stations become part of the publicity the event needs to sell tickets.

They're usually given them to promote the show. It's not like they're giving away half the seats. A dozen tickets out of hundreds or thousands is a drop in the bucket.

the only contest i understand approximately is one Pierre Garcon and Pat McAfee are having on the Circle the next day. they're gifting away 2 tickets each and each to the fan with the main ingenious sign. i think of the main factors are on Twitter/facebook.
